Team Kingspan Continental Press Release

Kingspan are pleased to announce the formation of a professional cycling team which will carry the Irish flag as its standard.

Kingspan have decided to start a new project with the express aim of delivering a team capable of participating and competing at the highest level. They have promised sufficient funding to compete in the Continental DivII for the foreseeable future.

They have appointed me as their man to achieve this target as well as developing and generating further interest in the sport in Ireland given its rich tradition with world class riders of the calibre of Seán Kelly and Stephen Roche in the past.

Our team will be presented over the coming weeks, once contracts can be finalised, though a strong Irish contingent is assured. All transfer news will be made available here as they happen.

Kingspan would also like to thank their secondary sponsor in this project, Sporza.

Finally, Kingspan wishes to welcome on board their equipment provider, GIANT.

Kingspan Outline Season Goals

As DS for Kingspan's new team, together with my staff, I quickly realised that there is a limited number of Irish riders out there that can fulfil their mission, seeing that the best riders from the country already ride for other Pro and Continental teams.

To this end, one rider in particular has been earmarked in the transfer window to meet the sponsor main objective.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k484/kopfan/univestgp2011_300.png

Detailed scouting reports have been received in respect of several foreign riders and these riders may be needed to finish in the top 10 of

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k484/kopfan/banner-vuelta-asturias.jpg

Being a new division with all new teams, it's hard to gauge just how good the team will be in relation to the others, so the sponsors have declared that they would be relatively happy to win 8 stages over the course of the season

Transfer Priorities Revealed

Transfer season is almost upon us and after an exhaustive search through available free agents, Kingspan have identified several targets of interest in their efforts to achieve their season goals.

There is a scarcity of Irish riders on the market unfortunately, but one of interest is a man who can ride a good TT, Stephen Gallagher.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k484/kopfan/SGallagher.jpg

Kingspan will also be targeting, young Irish sprint hopeful, Ronald Harvey, who will be needed to achive a result in the Univest GP.

For strong stage racers, we have had to look further afield, but with this, will bring more competition on the market. Experience of the likes of Kloden and Laverde will be much sought after.
Thereafter, all will be kept close to our chest, until contracts are signed.

Flurry of activity as Transfer Season begins

Kingspan have made their opening bids in the market and can assure fans that although competition is fierce, the team hierarchy are calm and believe that most targets will be joining the team.

Updates will be available as transfers are completed.

Nice to see an Irish team - most people usually make one just from Great Britain more generally, but this could be really interesting.

Further signings were made by the Kingspan team today in preparation for the coming season.
Two Irish riders, brings their contingent to 5, now including Paidi O'Brien and sprint hopeful Ronald Harvey, who cost more than expected.
David Belda, a steady Spanish climber and Mohammad Umardi Rosdi, a young Malaysian sprinter were both added with the team goals in mind.
Contact has been made with several other riders and some more new faces should be expected in the next 24 hours.

Team DS, kopfan, refused to comment on speculation as to who they may be, saying "Other teams have eyes and ears everywhere and Team Kingspan Continental are not in the rumour business. I'll leave that job to the media."

This reporter can confirm that there will be another Irish rider signed though..... as this is part of the UCI regulations which granted the team their licence to participate in CD2.

It was a good day at the offices of Kingspan today as they signed their final Irish rider, Dermot Nally. This means that the team now has its full compliment of Irish riders to meet the nationality rules set out by UCI.

Not only that but they also signed the Spanish climber and former national champion, Francisco Mancebo. who seems assured a team leader role in the mountains.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k484/kopfan/mancebo.jpg

Final piece of business of the day, which has just been sealed, sees the Italian sprinter, Elia Rigotto join the team. Rigotto will no doubt be tasked with achieving results on days where flat sprinters are required.

i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k484/kopfan/Rigoot.jpg

Team management hope to finalise their lineup before close of business tomorrow. They will then present their full team roster before heading off to their pre-season training camp in Southern Italy.

Mancebo is a nice signing, even if he is a bit past his best - not many teams can claim to having a ManGame GT winner on their roster!

The final two pieces of the jigsaw were completed today in the transfer market merry-go-round by Team Kingspan Continental.
Eddy Van Ijzendoorn, a Dutch cobble specialist and Portugese mountain man, Nuno Ribeiro were drafted, as the final forays by the new team.

Overall, in the opinion of this journalist, the team have left themselves very short when it comes to hilly races and furthermore, their sprinters do not like bumps in the road. It could be along hard season for the team, but it being their debut season, we will watch with interest and trust that management will continue next year to strengthen the team as a whole.

Finally, we are advised that a press conference is scheduled for later today where Irish Times cycling journalist and former cyclist, Paul Kimmage, will be questioning the management team.
