On this evening UPC announced they will found and sponsor a new team that will start in the Continental Division 2. As UPC is a cable company they think a cycling team will be the perfect opportunity to get the company name out. As UPC is a dutch company there will be mainly dutch riders, although no rider gets reject beforehand because of nationality.
The team details aren't known yet, as the main sponsor only decided to start this project today. What is known is that it's tyriion who will manage the team. He will be expected to get a strong line-up that can target the dutch races on the CDiv-2 calendar and be competitive throughout the season.
Jersey revealed!

More news will follow later on, as more details get unveiled.
DCM got on board as secondary sponsor to have a presence in the cdiv2. Although they haven't made any demands for riders their presence in this project can be viewed as a prospect for future seasons.

Interview with Tyriion
Interviewer
Hello Tyriion, congratulations on your new position as manager of the newly formed Team UPC. When a new team starts the first thing that people want to know is what are your objectives?
Tyriion
First of all thank you, managing a new team will surely be a big challenge. But I'm glad UPC gave me the chance to manage their team. The objectives of our sponsor are to promote the company on their own market, which is in the Netherlands. To reach this we will especially target the Delta Tour Zeeland and the Dutch Food Valley Classic in Veenendaal. Also I'm currently looking into wildcard options for C1 races in the Netherlands or maybe Belgium, depending on the possibilities that present themselves.
Interviewer
I know it's still a long time until the season will get underway, but which riders will be riding on your team?
Tyriion
It's too early to say yet. Me and my staff are looking into free agents, both veterans and youth riders that show promise. But there have been no formal contacts with riders and their managers yet.
Interviewer
Can't you say anything about the riders you are looking into?
Tyriion
I can only say that UPC wants some dutch talent on the team to increase the interest of people in our own country. I will not start any rumors as to which riders I'm looking into to prevent other teams from contacting those I would like to see signed. At the moment I have a shortlist of about 30 names, but I'm adding more every day.
Interviewer
Thanks for these first answers about this exciting new project. Hopefully you will be able to say more once the transfer season gets on the way.
Tyriion
You're welcome. The transfer season will be an exciting time, but I'm confident we will be able to sign some nice riders to get good results. |

In a press conference today on Palma de Mallorca Tyriion was proud to present the jersey the new Team UPC will wear during this season. Most noticeable on this jersey was the presence of a Belgian co-sponsor.

Asked about the sponsorship of DCM Tyriion answered the following;
Yes, DCM is a Belgian sponsor, but they have big interests in other European countries too. This won't necessarily mean that we have to sign Belgian riders. All I can say is that they payed for this press conference in Spain, they made no demands whatsoever for Belgian riders. The decisions on signings are mine alone and me and my staff are reviewing all possibilities with the utmost care.

Two days before the transfer season starts Team UPC posts the following on their website;
After speculations in the dutch press as tho which riders we will sign we will reveal our desired team captain. To get the season goals we have set ourselves we hope to sign Rik Kavsek, who we feel will be able to compete in the dutch cobbled races and maybe get good results in foreign classics aswell. We have already had preliminary contacts with his management team and the first negotiations have been promising. We also have had contacts with some teams who also wanted to sign him. There have been negotiations with those teams too, so we hope that the signing of Rik won't be a problem.

Interview with Tyriion, manager of Team UPC
Interviewer
So the transfer season for the newly created league of cycling has finally started, can you tell us how the first evening of negotiations went?
Tyriion
Yes, it has finally started, and I must say I'm pretty excited about this. There's been a lot of work behind the scenes of course, but the real shaping of a cycling team comes with the signing of riders.
Interviewer
Do you have any specifics on the negotiations, you have been very tight with names until now? The only name that has been linked to UPC is Rik Kavsek, did you contact him?
Tyriion
Yes, I can say we contacted Rik Kavsek and have made him an offer. He has to look into it now. Also we are trying to create an environment that can support him in his leading role. To this end we have also contacted Thomas Berkhout and Arne Hassink, two Dutch riders we feel can help Rik in the races that matter to us.
Interviewer
There have been reports that a delegation of Team UPC is in Spain as well. Are they on a holiday or are they contacting riders too?
Tyriion
They are not on holiday, as this is not the time of the season for the staff to take it easy. In Spain we are looking at the situation, as there are loads of talent there. I an only confirm contact with one rider at this time. Iban Iriondo, a rare Spanish cobbler, has been offered a spot in our squad.
That's it for now, we still have a busy week ahead.

Asked on further negotiations he answered: "We are currently negotiating with some Spanish riders (Manuel Ortega, Pablo Urtasun, Isidro Nozal) who can lead our team outside of the lowlands. We also approached Remmert Wielinga, Malaya van Ruitenbeek and Menno Horst to fill out the Dutch part of our roster."

This evening Team UPC has announced its full roster for the 2012 season. Manager Tyriion gave a list (see above) and short clarifications on the roles the different riders will get.
First there is Rik Kavsek. He will be the team leader for the most important races of the season, which in our case are all cobbled. With his cobble and flat skills he will be expected to last deep into the races and with his nice sprint ability he will be able to finish the job.
To support Kavsek in the cobbled season Team UPC has been able to sign 4 excellent cobble helpers. Thomas Berkhout will be his closest helper, as he is also able to prepare Kavseks sprint. Arne Hassink, Preben van Hecke and Iban Iriondo are all very durable riders who are able to chase all escaped riders in order to bring Kavsek close to the finish line at the front.
Of course the season doesn't exist exclusively off cobbled races. For this reason Team UPC also has signed 2 sprinters. Menno Horst is the fastest of the trio, although his weak ability on hilly terrain limits his chances. For this reason the Spaniard Pablo Urtasun has been signed. He combines a good sprint with decent hill abilities and to top it off he has a very nice TT as well, which makes him a dangerous participant in the flatter stage races.
Team UPC also has signed two futures sprinters. The Dutch sprinter Geert van der Sanden (24), who already has some experience has to work on his pure speed, but can survive hills and bumps decently. Spanish sprinter JJ Navarro (19) still has a lot of work to do, but he has shown great potential in youth races.
Because TTs are always an important pat of stage races, Team UPC has also signed some TT specialists. Of course Urtasun can ride a strong TT, but Malaya van Ruitenbeek is a pure specialist. Although he isn't as strong as many other TTers he can finish high up whenever the ride is solo. This also makes him a valuable helper on the flats. Manuel Ortega combines a decent TT with a strong ability to ride up hills, which makes him Team UPCs leader for hillier stage races.
Team UPC also wants a presence in mountainous terrain. Because mountains almost exclusively feature in stage races Team UPC has looked for climbers who aren't totally lost in a TT. For this they have found Remmert Wielinga and Isidro Nozal. Whenever the climbing lasts longer than a couple of kilometers they will be our top guys. And if there's a subsequent time trial they will be able to beat better climbers there due to their excellent TT capabilities.
And last but not least Team UPC has two very aggressive riders. Because the team lacks an absolute top sprinter and a hilly specialist we will be looking for our chances in a breakaway in quite a few races. Arjen de Baat is a durable rider (in dutch a 'hardrijder' who likes riding in a small group. Joost van Leijen is everything Arjen is, but he also brings great recuperation and even some acceleration to beat the other guys in the group when they make it all the way.
Above are listed 15 names, but we are still negotiating with a 16th rider. This will be Bart Sinnige, who has asked for time to think about our offer and will give his answer (and hopefully his signature) in the morning. Bart has shown some promise in TTs and will be given a chance to develop in our team.

Quick team analysis by nusport.nl
Riders: 16
Age: 28 average (19-35)
Avg skills: 69,3 (71-65,4)
Characteristic skills: Flat, Stamina, Cobble and Fighter.
Team UPC brings a mix of all skills except a puncher. Most of their riders are great on the flat and can go the distance. A fair number of riders favors breaks, which will hopefully net some results. Team UPC brings a strong team for the cobbled season with 5 specialized riders. They mix in 30+ riders, with fully developed mature profs and a few young and coming pros. With 10 Dutch, 1 Belgian and 5 Spanish riders they're an European team.

Interview with Bart Sinnige, rider of Team UPC.
Interviewer
Hello Bart, you have finally signed a pro contract and even though it's just in the CtDiv2 you must be quite excited. Tell us how this all came about.
Bart Sinnige
I am very excited to have signed with an actual professional racing team. Cycling was more of a hobby for me, but somehow Tyriion heard about me and showed his interest. The moment they made me an offer I of course accepted. And now I might race with the likes of Klöden, Mancebo and Nozal, who I used to watch on the tv.
Interviewer
Can you tell us something about your personal goals for this season?
Bart Sinnige
I will be racing in quite a lot of races this year, to gain experience in a peloton. I will ride the GP in Dubai for example and the GP Industria that closes the season. So I will see quite some places in the world. My main goal is the Chrono Gatineau where the management has allowed me to race. TTing is my specialty so that will be a big thing for me.
Interviewer
Will we be able to see you on your home ground?
Bart Sinnige
This year I sadly won't be riding in the Netherlands as the main sponsor goals are the Dutch races. So the captains will be riding there with the main support. I will be helping the team captains in the races mainly outside of Europe where I can gain experience and hopefully show myself once or twice this year.

Dubai GP
As for all CDiv2 teams our season kicks off in the tiny oil country of Dubai. Dubai has no hills or mountains on offer so the race will be pan flat and a great chance for sprinters to get into the picture. This is the profile off the race.

Team UPC will compete in this race with the following 5 riders;
Menno Horst
Geert van der Sanden
Javier Joaquin Navarro
Bart Sinnige
Joost van Leijen
With this line-up we clearly hope for a sprint finish. The two young guys Sinnige and Navarro probably won't have what it takes to help Horst deep into the final lap, but it will be great experience for them. van der Sanden already has some more power, so we hope he might be able to lead out Horst. Van Leijen is our man with experience here, who can either help chase escapees or be one himself to take away the pressure from the rest of his teammates. Finally we have Horst, our top sprinter, who will be expected to sprint for a good final position. Team UPC isn't really about great sprint support though so we expect nothing more then a top 10 finish.
Be that as it may Horsts name has appeared in the papers among the favourites, but we will do our best to keep an under-dog position and surprise everyone on the line. After a solid three weeks in Dubai with the team we know the track and have been able to watch similar races in Oman and Qatar. So see you all in Dubai!

Interview after the Dubai GP with tyriion, manager of Team UPC.
Interviewer
Clearly not the result you hoped for today, with your best performer on 24 and Horst nowhere in sight in the last sprint. Your first reaction?
Tyriion
Pretty early on Horst indicated he wasn't feeling well, so we had to change tactics during the race. Geert van der Sanden adapted really well and rode in the break all day long, which is great for such a young rider. But in the end it wasn't enough. Then we couldn't keep up in the final sprint, eventhough Joost van Leijen gave it his all.
Interviewer
What do you take away from this race?
Tyriion
It seems Het Nieuwsblad really is the team to watch on the flats as they did a great job controlling the pack and reeling in all breaks. We will keep that in mind for the later races. Other than that we have to hope van Leijen will keep his form as he will be riding the Tour of Geelong next. With a finishing kick like today he will be in good shape to win from a break, which are his specialty.
Interviewer
Can you give us the other names of your squad for the Australian stage race?
Tyriion
Other then van Leijen the same three young guys who raced today will be travelling to Australia. (Sinnige, vd Sanden and Navarro) Team captain will be Pablo Urtasun.
Interviewer
And your expectations?
Tyriion
Any results will be great, but we mainly hope we can get into the picture and maybe take a stage win. No real hopes for the GC though.

Today Team UPC made it's debut in the big Continental Tour in the Nedbank Cycling Classic in Namibia. The results weren't great eventhough the field wasn't strong. Remmert Wielinga was the best UPC rider, scoring a 22nd position far away from the front of the field. Asked about his opinion about the race Tyriion answered the following; It was a great chance for us to ride on a bigger podium, but I think this race was one of the least suitable races for our roster. Nonetheless it has been a great experience, and van Leijen even showed himself in the break. Now we continue preparations for the cobbled season in the D2, where we hope to get better results.

First day of the Tour of Geelong brought nothing particularly good. Although Navarro was the first to initiate breakaways our leader Urtasun couldn't do anything in the expected mass sprint. Still no great results from our team.

After four days in the saddle Team UPC has nothing to show for even if they have showed themselves. The first 3 days ended in mass sprints, but designated leader Pablo Urtasun was nowhere to be seen. He also failed to live up to expectations in the TT in stage 4 finishing 20th, even if this moves him up to 13th in GC it isn't the result that was hoped for.
Things are looking differently in the breaks though, with Team UPC being active in all three stages. First with the 19 year old Navarro, who has a tough time now paying back for his work in the first stage. And later with van Leijen on day 2 and 3, where he narrowly missed a top 10 spot on stage 3 only getting caught in the final kilometer.
All in all a stage race that doesn't show the big results that were foretold in the media, but there are tiny glimpses of Team UPC to be seen. They will hope for a good result in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne to get their season really started.
